Why You Should Use CloSYS vs. Chlorhexidine Rinses
Research and clinical studies comparing efficacy of CloSYS and Chlorhexidine (CHX) show that CloSYS rinses are equally effective in many key aspects of post-procedure oral hygiene while addressing a spectrum of clinical oral hygiene concerns.
How CloSYS Works
CloSYS patented formula contains Cloralstan®, the trade name for stabilized chlorine dioxide (CIO2). When CloSYS is exposed to the amino acids in your saliva, the antimicrobial Cloralstan® is activated. Once released, the Cloralstan® kills dental plaque-causing bacteria and volatile sulfur compounds that damage soft tissue.
- All CloSYS products contain the same key patented ingredient: Cloralstan® (stabilized chlorine dioxide / uniquely buffered sodium chlorite)
- Composition is buffered and stabilized to:
- Remain stable from the time of manufacture to the time of use
- Release the active ingredient within seconds when introduced into the mouth.
- Composition is naturally activated by:
- Amino acids found in human saliva
- Oxidation of volatile sulfur compounds
- Acid produced by bacteria found in biofilms
A New Standard for Patient Care
Research and clinical studies comparing efficacy of CloSYS and Chlorhexidine show that CloSYS rinses are equally effective in combating periodontal diseases with additional benefits.
CloSYS addresses a spectrum of clinical oral hygiene concerns.
When compared to Chlorhexidine (CHX), CloSYS showed comparable to or better than CHX in killing the oral bacteria that cause infections of the periodontium and endodontium, as well as dental caries and staph infections, and its favorable behavior toward healing cells (fibroblasts).
Why I Stopped Recommending Chlorhexidine
Amber Auger MPH, RDH, Thrive in the OP® & Functional RDH® Certification provider, explains why CloSYS has become a pillar in the success of her patient's compliance with oral disease treatment and management.
Why I Stopped Recommending Chlorhexidine
I've been practicing dental hygiene since 2007. While in school, I learned that Chlorhexidine was the standard of care. As a new graduate, I was surprised how many clinicians did not like the side effects of the product yet continued recommending it. Patients reported altered taste and extensive staining with the use of the product. I find that when patients experience negative effects like this, it can reduce their compliance and trust in the clinician. I didn’t feel like the benefits outweighed these side effects.
I began investing in my career and attended a continuing education course that highlighted the benefits of CloSYS® and its effectiveness. One clinical study highlighted how CloSYS® was as effective as Chlorhexidine without the stain. Upon further review, I found that fibroblasts, pH, and blood pressure were affected by the rinse we called the "gold standard."
Since 2011, I've recommended CloSYS® to my patients. I see the clinical benefits in every patient compliant with the recommendation. Patient compliance is extremely high with this product because it is available over the counter. Furthermore, if you can rinse with water, you can rinse with it. It is designed to be effective in ANY mouth, including the pediatric, special needs, geriatric, periodontally involved, tonsil stone-prone oral environment.
Furthermore, the product is gluten-free, sulfate-free, triclosan-free, alcohol-free, pH-balanced, dye-free, and available over the counter. Patients can stay in the rinse long-term without negative interactions.
CloSYS® has become a pillar in the success of my patient’s compliance with oral disease treatment and management.
